Meet Jason, Achieving AI Outcomes For Businesses
Ever ensuring that people win from advances in the power of AI
“Once I decide to do something, I keep doing it until I achieve the goal.”
Having taken up running during the pandemic, Jason, our AI Consulting Lead, has already notched up multiple marathons. It is this same tenacity which has seen Jason achieve throughout his career. His role at LAB³ is to help accelerate our AI capabilities, ensuring our offerings meet client needs given the rapid speed with which AI is evolving.
“My approach is to work with clients as individuals as opposed to the legal fiction of a company,” says Jason.
“I like to meet with people and understand what they need to achieve from a project to be personally successful.”
Not only does Jason play an instrumental role in keeping LAB³’s AI capabilities at the forefront, but he also personally leads our AI Business Envisioning workshops, travelling across Australia and New Zealand to meet with clients and ensure AI adoption projects are set for success from the outset.
“The aim is to help people from across the business identify an initial use-case which will deliver quantifiable value and then design an approach for the secure adoption of AI which can be scaled towards a bigger, longer-term goal,” says Jason.
Jason’s expertise in AI spans decades, back to when he was at university studying computer systems engineering where he tackled challenges like using AI to help read hand-written numbers and to optimise the scheduling of a national sporting competition. This motivated Jason to go on and obtain a master’s degree in AI, specifically to design and implement AI for the control of plastic injection moulding machines with the goal of achieving automatic adjustments for the ‘real world’, taking into account changes in ambient temperature and variations in machine performance and raw materials, and ultimately producing more consistently identical plastic parts.
“Most of the algorithms and techniques for AI are not much different today, it’s just that the rise of the internet has exponentially increased the amount of compute and publicly available data for training,” explains Jason.
“The power of the cloud makes what I was trying to achieve with AI back in university look like child’s play.”
Over his career Jason transitioned from having technical roles into presales, then sales and into leadership roles, including leading an AI business unit in the APAC region for a global technology services provider. This included overseeing the design and delivery of AI-driven software to help organisations improve in areas like customer service.
“The barrier to AI adoption and resulting business innovation has reduced tremendously thanks to the proliferation of pre-trained models readily available on Cloud platforms such as Azure,” says Jason.
Jason has always been a self-starter and enjoys the fast impact he can have at LAB³ without layers of permissions to progress ideas, including moving quickly to meet client requirements.
“I’d describe LAB³ as a place where you can forge your own path.”
Jason enjoys being able to work personally with our clients. “In understanding their goals, I can work directly with our presales, delivery, and executive teams to help achieve these outcomes,” says Jason.
Although it might be what he describes as “old school” Jason prefers working in the office and the chance for informal conversations with colleagues.
“I find informal discussions beneficial for idea-generation, as well as rewarding for me as a person who thrives on social interaction,” says Jason.
