LAB3 and Real Time Traffic use AI to turn up the dial on Road Safety

LAB3 and our technology partner Real Time Traffic have developed an AI-powered tool for road safety stakeholders

The NearMiss solution provides accurate real time data and visualisations about road traffic movement and near miss collisions. The solution is being showcased at the 2023 Australasian Road Safety Conference 19 – 21 September

“Imagine as a road safety stakeholder being able to better prioritise and target planning for infrastructure works projects to help save more lives,” said Alain Blanchette, Director – Data, IoT & AI, LAB3.

“Decisions like changing road and intersection design, and installing traffic lights, roundabouts and signage, can be made without the drawn-out and less accurate process of using old fashioned traffic counters, data from speed and red-light cameras, and motor accident records.”

NearMiss rapidly accelerates the collection of actionable data to understand traffic movement, making it an essential tool for road safety stakeholders. It is an end-to-end solution, from towers collecting high quality video data through to live visualisations on dashboards, providing maximum speed and accuracy of data.

“It has been exciting to work with Real Time Traffic by leveraging the technology expertise of both our organisations to develop a solution which can help save lives,” said Blanchette.

“Road safety stakeholders can now make accurate data-driven decisions and proactively take measures to avoid incidents much sooner than before.”

The solution has been developed specifically for the transport industry and uses live video analytics and AI to monitor near miss accidents, congestion, traffic statistics and other road events. “It has already proven itself invaluable including for the Transport for NSW and its Near Miss Project,” said Blanchette.

“Easy to deploy at any area of concern, in just a few weeks very specific information is provided about the nature of the safety issue and the level of severity of the issue. This helps with the fast identification of high risk and problem areas and makes it easier to develop a business case to deploy capital works.”

The solution aligns seamlessly with the principles of the Safe System approach, which makes it an essential tool for road safety stakeholders. It has three major benefits for road safety stakeholders:

    • Optimises investment – Enhances safety by combining real data and intelligent AI to prioritise road safety investments.
    • Saves more lives – Identifies problem areas earlier to make changes proactively, ensuring less accidents happen.
    • Avoids IoT complexity – Industry specific pre-configurations speed up setup and time to value with minimal cost and risk.

NearMiss efficiently tags, tracks, and classifies road users the moment they enter areas highlighted as potential risks. With a frame-by-frame tracking approach, the solution accurately calculates potential risk zones with events down to the millisecond.
