Hearing Australia has transformed its entire technology environment in the Azure Cloud

Hearing Australia is a corporate Commonwealth entity and is the nation's largest provider of government-funded hearing services for children, young adults under 26, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, pensioners and veterans. Hearing Australia has been helping Australians rediscover the joy of sound for 75 years, keeping people connected to their family, friends and the world around them.

Following a competitive market process, LAB3 was engaged to assist Hearing Australia move to an Infrastructure as Code capability.
Hearing Australia
Challenge
Hearing Australia operates within a highly competitive sector. Central to their business strategy, Hearing Australia developed a plan to transform their technology environment in the cloud - to increase efficiencies, remain competitive and ensure financial sustainability.
Ultimately, this would enable their dedicated team of audiologists and employees to improve their provision of world leading hearing services Australia-wide, including for people living in remote and disadvantaged communities.
Hearing Australia's technology environment featured legacy infrastructure, on-premises servers, and old networks. This presented an opportunity for Hearing Australia to focus on the modernisation of their ICT infrastructure environment, which in turn could contribute to improved operations.
Approach
Key for Hearing Australia was to maintain continuity of hearing services for their clients, along with maintaining the confidentiality and safety of personal information and records. LAB3 supported Hearing Australia over their entire cloud journey to achieve a seamless transformation.
In 12 short months, and with automated solutions - an Azure platform was built, a migration plan developed and migration to Azure actioned. Plus, there was a complete uplift of the Hearing Australia network, putting the team at Hearing Australia in a position to better secure and modernise their provision of hearing services.
- Improved productivity. Achieved through an M365 Security and cloud platform uplift.
- Long-term technical debt retired and future-proofed. Full DC exit to Azure including ongoing support for relevant cloud services.
- Improved security posture. Full security detection (leveraging Azure Sentinel) and LAB3's Security Operations Centre.
- Optimised Networking. Full Network transformation across all sites Australia-wide leveraging Meraki Software Defined Network.
- Platform for insight. Enabling Power BI across the organisation by deploying initial frameworks and governance to allow for broadscale uptake.
Impact
Hearing Australia now fully operates in Azure, with LAB3 providing the right level of support to empower the Hearing Australia technology team. There was a strong collaborative approach throughout the journey - with both regular and robust governance to ensure solutioning was consistent with Hearing Australia's goals, and with a focus on client enablement to share deep expertise in DevOps and Microsoft technologies.
